Those gamers who play on Xbox one (and who bought the season pass) found themselves having having access to the first DLC released for Dark Souls 3, Ashes of Ariandel. Naturally, we were all over that and jumped right in to this new and unexplored world. So be warned, we try to avoid to much, but spoilers are ahead. Read at your own risk!

For those who don’t know, or haven’t gotten to play yet, the DLC is accessed from the Cleansing Chapel Bonfire in the Cathedral of the Deep. A man in prayer there takes the Ashen One into the Painted World of Ariandel. A half frozen world, fraught with danger at every turn. Players will encounter soldiers wielding pyromancy, giant men wielding heavy axes, clubs, and great bows, packs of quick moving snow wolves, and even the trees are out to get you. In true Dark Souls fashion, the land is full of traps and tricks, with Frostbite being the most common danger.

Gamers can expect lots of loot however, with approximately 16 new weapons and shields, new armor, magic and even a couple of useful items. This land is harsh and unforgiving, but not unrewarding. Just now, if you want those rewards, you are going to have to explore, fight, and die for them. But the exploring is part of the fun, finding new nooks and crannies, terrifying new enemies, and an absolutely gorgeous landscape to explore.

Simply because it’s Dark Souls, the lore of the land is unclear, with scatterings of NPC’s roaming about, and two new bosses to contend with. We won’t go into much detail, but one boss is absolutely epic in a way that Souls players haven’t seen since the first game, while the other boss leaves something to be desired. And most importantly is the addition of a new PVP arena. Unfortunately, with the low number of players having access to the DLC, we don’t have much info on the PVP mechanics yet. But keep an eye out for that review in the future.
